Caching on SAP Netweaver Cloud Platform

The SAP Netweaver Cloud Platform is an excellent choice for building applications that should be available outside of your premises for e.g. your customers, suppliers or employees. Instead of having to add a new layer of application servers, reverse proxies and incorporating specific firewalls to your web applications (https://www.fortinet.com/products/web-application-firewall/fortiweb) in order to expose these new applications to the internet, you could also just start building on the SAP Netweaver Cloud platform. In many scenarios, a connection to your back-end to both retrieve and update information is required. An example of this is an ERP system that manages several aspects of…

Interviewer at SAP Teched Live

During SAP Teched Madrid 2012, I was asked if I wanted to Interview Sam Yen, who has recently accepted the daunting challenge at SAP of improving the user experience. Of course I found this a great honour and couldn’t resist the offer. I was early at the interview location and because there schedule was a little delayed, I had a nice chat with Sam about what he is doing at SAP and have had a personal walk through the user experience booth at Teched, I was impressed by his fashionable taste, he was wearing some pieces from The Fifth Collection.…

SAP Innojam – The geek iron man

On November 11 and 12, I have attended my fourth Innojam. As I’ve never been part of a winning team, it was about time to really my best effort into it, and I think it paid of, as we ended at a shared 1st place. The theme of this Innojam was “Better cities – Better lives”, focusing on urban issues. My team was looking into social aspects in urban environments, in which many people don’t even know their neighbour. In the design thinking session, we have quickly tried to become experts in this area by indulging ourselves into material on…

Customer testimonial for SAP/Phoqus

In my job with Phoqus, I have been exploring to bring some of Phoqus’ solutions to the cloud and have partnered with the product teams of SAP Labs Israel and SAP Labs Walldorf to try to run some of the applications on SAP’s cloud platform and the SAP Netweaver Cloud portal. Although I didn’t expect that we would be recognized for doing something really revolutionary, one day I found an email with the content below in my inbox: Happy to inform you that your solution showcase on Netweaver Cloud has made a great impression on the selection board which was…

Sleeping better with your data in the cloud?

A recent tweet by @sapnwcloud, pointed in the direction of a new promo video about the SAP Netweaver Cloud Service offering. The tweet was followed with a “Tell us what you think”. I’m quite a cloud fan, and thought the video perfectly showcased SAPs Netweaver Cloud service offering. On the other hand, I also found that summarizing what’s in the box doesn’t completely cut it. Many IT managers are considering cloud solutions, but quite a lot of them still experience a feeling of discomfort with regards to extending their operations to the cloud. While using cloud services involving Elastic Stack…

When the River runs dry

It has been awfully quiet around the SAP River platform. After its initial announcement in 2010, private mentor program, beta programs, trials and innojams, the service apparently didn’t catch enough steam for a successful birth. Instead, SAP management has decided to discontinue SAP River platform development, with the exception of SAP Carbon Impact. To me, this came as quite an unexpected move, as most reviews and blogs on SAP River showed a very positive verdict. Reasons for shutting down River One can only guess about the reasons for the shutdown: River is a RAD tool based on data modeling. Is…

Joining the SAP Mentors initiative

As of today it is official. I have been asked to join the SAP mentors initiative and of course could only say yes to such a great honor. I really consider this a a great honor and responsibility, which I’m sure you appreciate, being among the “top” 100 of 2.5 million SCN members. SAP Mentors are considered the top community influencers of the SAP Ecosystem. Most of the ~100 mentors work for customers or partners of SAP. All of them are hands-on experts of an SAP product or service, as well as excellent champions of community-driven projects. Related: SAP mentors…

Great fun at SAP InnoJam NL

What an excellent event. I really loved the vibe of enthusiasm and dedication by so many extremely bright people, willing to sacrifice their Friday and Saturday to work on SAP’s latest and greatest and to support charity organizations with a tiny IT budget. I learned a lot of new things during the 30 hours of wizardry and hacking: That “minority report”-like interfaces have reached us way before 2054, the year of the film’s story. And using Kinect they can even be operated without the little light-emitting thimbles Tom Cruise is wearing. That project River has a great potential and allows…

SAP Netweaver Individual Developer Licenses

As long as I am developing custom software based on SAP, I have always had the need (or maybe desire) to play around with some new functions or try something out that I didn’t want to do in a regular SAP enviroment, either because it would jeopardise operation or just didn’t have anything to do with the current project or business. Previously SAP had several types of licenses available that could meet this demand: SDN Trial licenses SAP Discovery server Netweaver Developer subscription However, there was always a catch: No recent ABAP stack License expirations and the hassle of re-licensing…

SAP Netweaver versions

During the SAP Teched 2009 most session were about new versions of SAP Netweaver or SAP Netweaver components. During these sessions the version numbers in which these features would be available were mentioned, but every time it seemed to be a different version than the other speaker was talking about. The list below gives an idea of some of the permutations that I have heard: 7.0 Enhancement Pack 1 / 7.0 Enhancement Pack 2 7.0.1 / 7.0.2 / 7.1.1 7.1 / 7.2 I’m not sure about how other folks received this version-puzzle, but it started to dazzle me. Especially when…
